Different Lights, Same Dawn

The 150th anniversary of the birth of Kim Koo, Different Lights, Same Dawn brings together three artists from different generations to reconsider the images and memory of Korea’s independence movement.

History is never seen from a single perspective. For some, the figures of the independence movement remain in the monochrome language of archives and memory. For others, they emerge through contemporary images, color, and new forms of representation.

Park Soonchul, Son Jihoon, and Yoo Seung-Baik each approach this shared history through distinct visual languages—from ink painting and digital animation to spray paint and color.

Across generations and mediums, their works propose different ways of seeing the past. Yet beneath these differences lies a shared direction.

Independence is not only a historical achievement. It remains a living idea—continuing to move through the present, toward the same dawn.
